December

General News:

The store will close at 5 pm on Saturday, December 24th for Christmas Eve.

The store will be closed Sunday, December 25th for Christmas and Saturday, December 31st for New Year’s Eve (we will also be closed New Year’s Day).

Saturday Demonstrations will be done on an ‘as requested’ basis to demonstrate the use of products being purchased. If you need to have a product demonstrated that you purchased or will purchase from Rail Tales, please contact us by email (bretjones@railtalesva.com) or call us at 984-1170.

 

Gaming News:

Every Friday: Friday Night Magic (FNM) will continue to be draft format. The draft starts at 6:30 pm and cost $14.00. The draft format will be Kaladash.

Every Sunday: The store will be available for open board gaming from 12 noon until at least 8pm except that we will be closed on the 25th and January 1st as stated above.

Sunday, December 4th, 11th, and 18th: the store will host a magic event based on demand. Contact Nathan (984 1170) for details.

Saturday, December 3rd, 10th, and 17th, Rail Tales will be hosting “Standard Kaladesh Showdown” events starting at 7:15 pm and running until the event finishes. The event cost is five dollars all of which is put into the prize pool as gift certificates for the top three players. We will also be handing out standard “show down” boosters to ten people using the recommended format.

 

Club News:

The Charlottesville Model Club will meet on Saturday, December 10th starting at 4 pm. The meeting will need to wrap up around 7 pm in order to accommodate the Magic Event which starts at 7 pm.

There is no meeting of the Jefferson Railroad Club this month. The next meeting is in January.

 

November

General News:

The store will be closed November 24th for Thanksgiving.

We will open at 10 am on Friday, November 25th but will otherwise observe our normal hours for the holiday season.

Saturday, November 5th: Rail Tales will hold a painting and airbrush demonstration from 2 pm until 4 pm. Among other subjects, we will be painting and weathering an N scale bridge.

Tuesday, November 8th: VOTE!

Friday, November 11th: Veteran’s day. Thank you veterans for allowing us to (among other things) vote on the previous Tuesday. All Veterans will receive ‘same as cash’ discounts for purchases made with Credit Cards on discounted items.

Saturday, November 12th: Rail Tales will hold a figure painting demonstration from 2 pm until 4 pm. We will be painting both small (HO), medium (28mm), and large (1/35th) figures using 3 different techniques.

Saturday, November 19th: Rail Tales will host a scenery making demonstration. Subject to be determined so if you want to see something particular, let us know.

Saturday, November 26th: No demonstration due to the Thanksgiving shopping madness and the need to set up for the MtG event (see gaming news).

Sunday, November 13th: In addition to the open board gaming, there will be an Ironclads miniature game. If you have an interest in Civil War naval action, this is a great game to learn.

October

General News:

The store will be closed for normal business on Sunday, October 16th for a Magic the Gathering Tournament (see Gaming News).

The Jefferson Railroad Club will be operating its module set in the store on Sunday October 30th. The public is welcome to come in and ask questions but space may be a little cramped, so please bear with us.

Saturday, October 8th: Rail Tales will hold a painting demonstration featuring airbrushing and hand painted weathering techniques from 2 pm until 4 pm. The Model Club meeting will immediately follow. The featured weathering project is a brass steam locomotive (painted during a previous demonstration). Also discussed will be making your own decals and proper decal application.

Saturday, October 15th: Rail Tales will host a scenery demonstration from 2 pm until 4 pm. Topics to be determined by request. Note that this is being held on the 3rd Saturday instead of the 4th Saturday to avoid a scheduling conflict.

Saturday, October 29th: Rail Tales will host a demonstration of locomotive decoder installations from  2 pm until 4 pm.

Every Sunday except the 16th and 30th: The store will be available for open board gaming from 12 noon until at least 8pm. The 16th is a PPTQ and the 30th is a railroad club operating session.

Sunday, October 16th: Rail Tales will host a Magic the Gathering Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier for the Nashville Pro Tour event starting at 1 pm with registration opening at 12. The store will be closed for normal business during this time. As usual, if we have 18 or more participants, we will provide free pizza. Note: Control of this event is in the hands of the judge(s), not Rail Tales, and any disciplinary action will be solely at their discretion.

Saturday, October 22nd: Rail Tales will host a Magic the Gathering Games Day event starting at 4:30. The store will remain open for normal business during this event. This is our first experiment with a Saturday MtG event and we hope to have a good turnout.

Sunday, October 2nd, 9th, and 23rd: Rail Tales will host a draft for Magic the Gathering beginning at 1 pm.  This draft is limited to 16 players in order to allow room for the regular open board gaming. Format to be determined by consensus.

Sunday, October 3oth: The Jefferson Railroad Club will hold an Operating Session of the club modules. Members will begin setting up at noon and the system should be operating by 1 pm and operations are planned to be completed by 4 pm but the modules will remain in place through end of business.

 

September

General News

Due to the Labor Day holiday weekend, no demonstration or club meeting will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3rd. The Charlottesville Model Club meeting has been moved to Saturday, Sept 10th.

Also, there will be no official Sunday Magic Draft on September 4th due to Nathan being at Baltimore Comicon. However, if players wish to engage in an informal draft, they will still be eligible for the draft discount on card purchases. Also note the register will closed on the 4th at 6 pm for accounting (so Bret does not have to come in on Labor Day!). 

The store will be closed to normal business on Sunday, September 25th to facilitate our pre-release event for Kaladash.

The Jefferson Railroad Club will meet on Saturday, September 24th at 4 pm (after the scenery demo) instead of on Sunday.

Saturday, September 10th: Rail Tales will hold a painting demonstration featuring airbrushing and hand painted weathering techniques from 2 pm until 4 pm. Among other subjects, we will be testing out the Vallejo Game Air colors. Painting and weathering concrete will be the feature subject. The Model Club meeting will immediately follow.

Saturday, September 17th: Rail Tales will hold a track and train electrical work demonstration from 2 pm until 4 pm. Feature topics include installing and setting up Smartswitch turnout controls and installing certain types of track signals.

Saturday, September 24th: Rail Tales will hold a scenery demonstration from 2pm until 4 pm. Feature topics will be by request prior to the demonstration.

 

Gaming News-

I inadvertently posted a Games Day event for the 11th. This was a mistake and I apologize for any confusion.

Every Friday: Friday Night Magic (FNM) will continue to be draft format. The draft starts at 6:30 pm and cost $14.00. Note that the first four drafts are Conspiracy multi-player format (2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd). The draft on the 30th will be Kaladash.

Sunday, September 11th and  18th: Rail Tales will host a draft for Magic the Gathering beginning at 1 pm.  This draft is limited to 16 players in order to allow room for the regular open board gaming. Format to be determined by consensus.

Sunday, September 25th: Rail Tales will be host a pre-release event for Kaladash starting at 1 pm (registration starts at noon). As always, if we have 18 or more players, we provide free pizza. There will be door prizes and side events as usual.

Every Sunday except the 25th: The store will be available for open board gaming from 12 noon until at least 8pm. Also note that on Sunday, September 4th, the register will close at 6pm for accounting but players will be allowed to stay and play until 8pm.

Saturday, September 24th: The Jefferson Railroad Club will hold an organizational meeting. This will be used to establish the setup and operations for our Operational meeting in October. Many members have changed the configuration of their modules or added modules and we are working on creating a second ‘loop’.

 

August

General News

Due to scheduling conflicts, the model building demonstration will not be held August 6th and the Model Club meeting has been moved to August 13th.

Saturday, August 6th: The Virginia Train Collectors Charlottesville Summer Show will be held at the Charlottesville Elk’s Lodge 389 starting at 9 AM and running until 4 pm. Rail Tales will be present, setting up and operating a portion of the Jefferson Module Railroad as well as answering general model railroading questions. The store will also be open and anyone attending the show and collecting one of our fliers will receive 10% off on all regularly priced items for that day (only) by presenting the flier to Nathan at the store. Saturday, August 13th: Rail Tales will hold a painting and weathering demonstration from 2 pm to 4 pm. Immediately afterwards, the monthly meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club will be held on a special day.

Saturday, August 20th: Rail Tales will hold a track laying and wiring demonstration from 2 pm to 4 pm. This will feature laying Peco HO flex track and turnouts and installing and demonstrating Smartswitch turnout controls.

Saturday, August 27th: Rail Tales will hold a scenery demonstration, specifically (unless we get a special request) installing ground covers and details and making roads.

Every Sunday except August 14th: Rail Tales will host a second weekly draft for Magic the Gathering beginning at 1 pm.  This draft is limited to 16 players in order to allow room for the regular open board gaming.

Sunday, August 14th: Rail Tales will host a Games Day for Magic the Gathering. This is a Standard Format event which begins at 1 pm. Deck lists are required.

Every Sunday: The store will be available for open board gaming from 12 noon until at least 8pm and possibly later if Nathan wants to stay and game. However, on Sunday, August 14th, Rail Tales will also be holding a Games Day for Magic the Gathering and priority for seating will be given for participants in that event.

July

General News-

Due to scheduling conflicts, there will be no hobby demonstrations on July 9th and 23rd.

All month: Rail Tales will be constructing a Marklin layout during store hours until near the end of the month. This will occupy much of our space and we appreciate your patience. It will be stored for our Magic and Gaming events.

Saturday, July 2nd: The store will host a demonstration of basic plastic model assembly techniques, including a demonstration of some simple scratchbuilding projects (sidewalks, roof and interior details). The subject for this demonstration is a block of kitbashed HO scale buildings destined for the “Otter Bay” module of the JRR. The model club meeting will NOT follow as it has been moved to the second Saturday.

Sunday, July 3rd through Sunday July 10th: The National Model Railroad Convention will be held in Indianapolis. Bret will be there and not in the store July 7th through the 10th, leaving the store in Nathan’s capable hands.

Saturday, July 9th: The store will host the July meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club on a special day (see club info below) from 4 pm until business until 7 pm. Mike Powers has promised us a demonstration (part 2 of his last demonstration).

Saturday, July 16th: the store will host a track-laying demonstration of some kind. This is likely to be related to the Marklin project but we may be far enough along to work on something else. Call for details if you want to see conventional track laying.

Sunday, July 17th: the store will be closed for regular business in order to host a Magic the Gathering “Eldritch Moon” Prerelease (see below for details).

Thursday, July 21st through Sunday, July 24th: Bret will be out of the store installing the aforementioned Marklin layout… Nathan will again be in charge.

Sunday, July 24th: Rail Tales will be closed for regular business in order to host a Magic the Gathering Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier (see below for details).

(Monday, July 25th- 1 pm- construction meeting of the Jefferson Railroad- members only: the store will otherwise be closed at it normally is on Monday…)

Saturday, July 30th: Rail Tales will host a special demonstration of Model Railroad DCC Decoder Installation from 2pm until 4 or 5 pm. Basic concepts of installation and programming will be covered and an example of a sound and a non-sound system will be installed. One installation will be ‘drop in’ and at least one will be soldered (two if time permits). If you want to try your hand at the new tech, now is the time…

Sunday, July 31st: Rail Tales will host an operating session of the Jefferson Railroad with a new module configuration plus our new staging yard.

Registration starts at 11 am and the event starts at noon. Pre-register if you can because there are only 36 spaces available. Cost is $20.00. Top prize is a slot in the next regional pro tour qualifier. Format is Modern Constructed. This is a by-the-rules event, so have your deck list on hand and a good knowledge of formal tournament procedure in mind.

General News-

Saturday, June 4th: The store will host a demonstration of basic plastic model assembly techniques, including a demonstration of various tools. The model of choice is the Pegasus Models “Nautilus” from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This is a multi-media kit (it has metal parts and soft plastic parts) with a nice interior and a giant squid stand. We will also demonstrate basic styrene plastic sheet work. (Afterwards, we will host the monthly meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club on its new day and time.)

Saturday, June 11th: The store will present a demonstration of painting techniques including airbrushing, from 2 pm until 4 pm. Unless otherwise specified, we do a vehicle weathering (usually a piece of rolling stock), a building weathering, and a basic model painting demonstration each session. For this session, by request, we will be demonstrating how to paint stone walls. If there is something specific you want to see painted, let management know so they can arrange to cover that subject. Sunday, June 12th: the store will be closed for regular business in order to host a Magic the Gathering “Eternal Masters” Draft (see below for details).

Saturday, June 18th: The store will present a demonstration of track laying techniques using flex track and Peco brand turnouts over cork roadbed from 2pm until the task is completed. For this particular demonstration, we will be laying track over bridges and fixing rails to bridge track as well as installing a switch and Peco/ANE switch machine.

Saturday, June 25th: The store will present a demonstration of basic scenery techniques using Sculptamold over Shaper Sheet, sculpting and painting Sculptamold rock, and making trees using 3 different techniques.

Every Friday: Friday Night Magic (FNM) will continue to be draft format using the current draft format. The draft starts at 6:30 pm and cost $14.00.

Sunday, June 5th, June 19th, and June 26th: The store will be available for open board gaming from 12 noon until at least 8pm and possibly later if Nathan wants to stay and game. The June 26th date will share space with the Jefferson Railroad Club meeting.

Sunday, June 12th: Rail Tales will host a special Magic the Gathering draft for Eternal Masters. The store will otherwise be closed to facilitate this event. The cost is $30, which includes 3 ET boosters and free pizza. The store will provide prize support in the form of 1 regular pack per entry chosen by the recipients from our stock. Pre-register if you can because there are only 32 spaces available. Unlike a normal draft, for this event you must buy the boosters from the store as the entry fee offsets our costs for food and closing the store.

Sunday, June 26th: the Jefferson Railroad Club will meet at the store at 1:00 pm. This is a work and organization session. We will set our design and operations lists for the July operating session. If you want your module(s) included in the operating session, you need to attend if possible. Hopefully, we will get our operating system finally worked out. We also have some new members building modules and we need to discuss how to incorporate their ideas.

 

May

General News-

Due to personnel shortages and work demands, Rail Tales will only take repairs for vintage Lionel (pre 1970) and all Marklin products and as well as on any items sold through the store. Rail Tales will only offer decoder installation and related upgrades to existing customers and future customers for whom we are building a layout. We deeply regret having to take this step and if we should find suitable personnel in the future (or if my health improves to where I can go back to working 12 hour days), we will attempt to serve the general public again.

Rail Tales WILL continue to accept vintage Lionel and all Marklin repairs and service work.  We will also assist with items purchased through the store. Thank you for your understanding.

Sunday, May 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd: The store will be available for open board gaming from 12 noon until at least 8pm and possibly later if Nathan wants to stay and game. This includes during the Games Day event.

Sunday, May 29th: Rail Tales will host a Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier (PPTQ). The store will otherwise be closed to facilitate this event. Registration starts at 11 am and the event starts at noon. Pre-register if you can because there are only 36 spaces available. This is Sealed Deck Event using Shadows Over Innistrad boosters (6). Cost is $35.00 including the price of the cards. Top prize is a slot in the next regional pro tour qualifier.  Other prize support depends on attendance. This is a by-the-rules event, so some knowledge of formal tournament procedures is recommended. The store will otherwise be closed for this event so we may re-arrange the infrastructure. If we have at least 18 pre-registers, we will provide free pizza.

Wednesday, March 16th: The Charlottesville Model Club will hold its regular monthly meeting starting at 6 pm. This is an open build session, so we hope people will come in to build or paint whatever they happen to be working on.

Sunday, March 27th: The Jefferson Railroad Club will hold a work session and organizational meeting starting at 1 pm. Topic of discussion will be rules for the next operating session in April. The work session will entail building a fiddle yard module.

General News-

Saturday, February 13th: The store will present a demonstration of painting techniques including airbrushing, from 2 pm until 4 pm. If there is something specific you want to see painted, let management know so they can arrange to cover that subject. Call 434-984-1170.

Saturday, February 20th: The store will present a demonstration of track laying techniques using flex track and Peco brand turnouts over cork roadbed from 2pm until the task is completed. Time permitting, a demonstration of wire soldering and/or ANE switch machine installation will also be made.

 

Gaming News-

Every Friday: Friday Night Magic (FNM) will continue to be draft format using the current draft format. The draft starts at 6:30 pm and cost $14.00.

Sunday, February 14th: Oath of the Gatewatch Games Day. Registration starts at 11 and the event itself starts at noon. The format is Standard Constructed. Normal event registration costs $5.00 and you need a deck list. We expect a light turnout and so are neither closing the store nor restricting board game activities.

Note: We are fully aware that this is Valentine’s Day. We did not pick the date, Wizards of the Coast did. We apologize for any domestic strife this may cause…

Sunday, February 7th, 14th,  21st, and 28th: The store will be available for open board gaming from 12 noon until at least 8pm and possibly later if Nathan wants to stay and game. Space may or may not be somewhat limited on the 14th due to the MtG event listed above. One table will be reserved on the 28th for the JRC club meeting (see below).

If you are interested in joining the module club, this is a good chance to have some input into what the club does over the coming year. Topics of discussion include a critique of the January ops session and planning for future ops sessions.

Sunday, January 24th: Our 2 year anniversary in this location.

The store was closed from noon on January 22nd through January 24th for a major snow event.

Sunday, January 17th: Oath of the Gatewatch Pre-release! Registration starts at 11 and the event itself starts at noon. We will be closing the store to regular business in order to re-arrange the furniture in order to accommodate the expected number of attendees. (Let us all chant ‘no snow! no snow!’ together please…) If we have at least 18 persons pre-register, Rail Tales will once again provide free pizza, so lets get those names down…

Sunday, January 3rd, 10th, and 24th ONLY: The store will be available for open board gaming from 12 noon until at least 8pm and possibly later if Nathan wants to stay and game. Note that the third and fifth Sundays will not be available.

 

Club News-

Wednesday, January 20th: The regular meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club will take place at 6 pm. Bret Jones will be demonstrating and water technique among other things.

Sunday, January 31st: The Jefferson Railroad Club will have an operating session. Although the store will remain open, space will be a little tight. We hope to be up and running by 1 pm and operate until around 3. This is a DCC setup with radio control, so if you want to see what DCC or module clubs are about, stop by.
