December

Rail Tales will be closing at 5 pm on Thursday, December 24th and remain closed Friday, December 25th for Christmas.

Rail Tales will be closed December 31st and January 1st for New Years.

Beginning this December, Rail Tales will no longer host gaming on Saturdays. Instead, we will be open for public gaming on Sundays from 12 pm to 8 pm. Although the store will officially close at 6 pm, staff will remain on site to allow games to continue until at least 8 pm.

All month: Every Friday we will continue to host our regular Friday Night Magic using the current draft format in effect for that week except that we will not be holding drafts Christmas day and New Years Eve. Sorry. The draft begins at 6:30 and costs $14.00, including prize packs.

All month: Every Sunday, Rail Tales will host an open gaming event. This replaces our Saturday Game Night. Open gaming tables are available from 12 pm until 8 pm.

Wednesday December 16th: We will host our regular meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club at our usual 6 pm start. Take a break from Christmas shopping…

November

October

Saturday October 10: Rail Tales will be conducting an airbrush and painting demonstration from 2 pm to 4 pm. This is open to the public.

Saturday October 17: Rail Tales will be conducting a track laying, wiring and weathering demonstration from 2 pm to 4 pm. This is open to the public.

Sunday October 18: Rail Tales will be  hosting an operating session of the Jefferson Railroad module club starting at 1 pm. Most likely, trains will start moving around 2 pm as it takes time to set up. Persons interested in DCC systems and train operations in general are welcome to observe and possibly participate. This session runs until 4pm or so.

Wednesday October 21: Rail Tales will host the monthly meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club starting at 6 pm.

Sunday October 25: Rail Tales will host the Battle for Zendicar Games Day. Registration starts at 11 am and the event starts at noon. You will need a deck list. There is a $5 fee to pay for prize support. The store will remain open for regular business.

 

 

September

Special Note: Rail Tales will be closed to normal business on Sunday, September 27 so that we may host the Magic the Gathering pre-release: Battle for Zendicar.

We are closing to normal traffic so that we can re-arrange the store temporarily in order to make room for the anticipated popularity of this event. Rail Tales will also be providing extra prize support, random door prizes, special promotions for early registration, free pizza, and more! Come join in the fun. Registration starts at 11 am with the event itself starting at noon.

Thursday Night Casual Magic has been cancelled due to Nathan getting burned out from too many long days in a row. We apologize for any inconvenience. We may renew this event in the future if staffing permits.

Saturday September 12: Rail Tales will host a airbrush demonstration from 2 pm to 4 pm. This is free and open to the public. This is the second Saturday instead of the third Saturday because:

Bret Jones will be on vacation from September 13 through September 21, returning on September 22. The store will be Nathan’s very capable hands…

Wednesday September 16: The regular monthly meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club will be held starting at 6 pm.

There will be no meeting of the Jefferson Railroad Club this month. Next month on Sunday, October 18th, the club will hold its final operating session of the year. This is being moved from the last Sunday because the NMRA MER convention is taking place the next weekend.

August

Space is usually available by 6 pm for those who want to start early but space is not guaranteed until 7 pm due to other activities in the store. EDH, Standard, and Modern formats are usually represented. Exact formats represented on any given night depends on attendee choice.

All month: Rail Tales has been commissioned to build a series of dioramas for the National Revolutionary War Museum being built in Philadelphia. We will continue work this month on the components of the first of these dioramas: Knox’s “Noble Train of Artillery”.

All month: We will continue work on the Alsace and Lorraine Railroad layout.

Saturday August 1st: The Virginia Train Collectors meet will be held at the Elk’s Lodge on Stony Point Road from 9 am to 3 pm. This promises to be a great show and we hope you railroad fans out there can make it. We will have several layouts on hand including our latest rebuild of our O scale (formerly known as Coal and Oil). Attendees can receive a flyer from our booth good for 10% off your purchase until 7 pm this day only.

Sunday August 9th: Rail Tales will be hosting a Game’s Day Magic the Gathering Tournament. Entry fee is still only $5. Registration starts at 11 and the even starts at noon. As always, bring a deck list. The format is TBA.

Saturday August 15: Rail Tales will hold a structure and vehicle weathering demonstration from 2 pm to 4 pm. We will be demonstrating our usual techniques using washes, drybrushing, powders, and stains plus due to popular demand, we will also show some airbrushing with the new Badger 360 system.

Wednesday August July 19: The monthly meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club will be held at our usual 6 pm start time. The club has started its ‘tank build’ and had a good time learning airbrushing and weathering powders last month. This month there will be a demonstration of basic brass soldering techniques (hopefully) as well as more assembly and painting.

Sunday August 30: The Jefferson Railroad Module Club will hold its monthly meeting. We hope to construct a corner module to edge us towards our goal of looping…

 

 

July

The last hour of this meeting from 11 to 12 will be open to the public (the store will open to the public at 11 am as usual). Bret Jones will be presenting a clinic on detailing and weathering modern rail cars (mostly this means adding graffiti) including basic airbrush work.

Sunday July 12: Rail Tales will be hosting a pre-release tournament for Magic the Gathering: Origins. Registration starts at 11 am and the tournament starts at 12. We have a certain number of free play mats to give away to persons who pre-register.

Wednesday July 15: The monthly meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club will be held at our usual 6 pm start time. The club has started its ‘tank build’. This month there will be a demonstration of basic airbrush and weathering powder techniques.

Saturday July 18: Rail Tales will hold an Airbrushing demonstration from 2 pm to 4 pm. We will be demonstrating the new Badger 360 system and will allow attendees to try their hand with the remarkable new airbrush.

Sunday July 26: The Jefferson Railroad Module Club will hold an operating session from 1 pm until approximately 4 pm. This is our first actual operating session with everything hooked up so it may be a little ‘start-and-stop but it will also be instructive to those new to the hobby as to all the things to take into account when designing and operating a model railroad. We will be using the NCE radio system to control the layout.

 

June

All month: We are building a layout to be installed in a local hotel and this will by our primary project for the rest of the month. The schedule for this layout is tight and it will be complete down to the last figure and sign.

Wednesday June 17: at 6 pm: Regularly monthly meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club. We will be working on our group build and doing individual build projects in addition to our usual meeting activities. Open to new members.

May

Sunday May 3: The Shenandoah Valley Model Train and Railroading Show takes place in Fishersville from 10 am to 4 pm. This is at Augusta Expoland. We will have several tables set up so come by and say hello.

Sunday May 10: Magic the Gathering standard format event. Entry fee is $5 to be given back as prizes. Registration starts at 11 am and the event starts at 12 pm. You must have a deck list.

Saturday May 16: In-store airbrushing demonstration from 2 pm to 4pm.

Wednesday May 20: at 6 pm: Regularly monthly meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club

Friday May 22: Modern Masters releases. If you have not already reserved your box(es), please do so as this is a limited access product. Boxes are $240 plus tax (MSRP).

Sunday May 24: Special Event! This is a Magic the Gathering Modern Masters Draft. Entry price is $30 for 3 packs of Modern Masters. Prize support provided by the store will be 1 regular pack per entry to be distributed per regular draft rules. Limited slots are available so please pre-register if you can. Registration on the day of the event starts at 11 am and the event starts at 12 pm.

Sunday May 31: Regular monthly meeting of the Jefferson Railroad Club at 1 pm. This event has been cancelled for this month- Bret will be out of town and unable to host. We will resume next month.

January 18th- Rail Tales will be hosting a Pre-Release for Magic the Gathering: Fate Reforged. Registration the day of the event starts at 11:00 am and the event starts at noon. The event costs $24.99, which includes the pre-release box, five booster packs of Fate Reforged and one clan specific booster. We are accepting pre-registration and the first 15 persons to register will receive a free play mat. Prize support varies with attendance.

January 21st: Rail Tales will host the regular monthly meeting of the Charlottesville Model Club.

January 24th: Rail Tales 1 year anniversary! We will be having several special promotions, so come in and wish us a happy birthday!
